The island of Fogo (Djarfogo)

The island of Fogo (Djarfogo) was discovered on May 1, 1640 by Portuguese navigators. This is one of the ten Islands that comprise the archipelago of Cape Verde. Named earlier as ‘São Filipe’ but later changed to the Fogo Island due to its great volcano, the highest point of Cape Verde with approximately 2.829 meters. About four hours walk will take to reach the top of the crater and it is advisable to bring protection because it is quite cold at the top. With a spectacular beauty, is undoubtedly the biggest tourist attraction of the island. It is still considered an active volcano with the last eruption in April 1995.

One of the 3 municipality of the island is the municipality of ‘Santa Catarina’. A parish based in ‘Cova Figueira’ (Kóba Figera) located near the volcano and due to this with great natural potential. The municipal holiday is November 25, the date of the conclusion of ‘Santa Catarina’.

Some of the traditional dishes of the island one does stand out called ‘Djagacida’ (made with corn flour and beans), ‘Xerém’ ( thickered cornmeal) mixed with butter and beef stew, ‘Camoca’ (roasted and ground corn), ‘Gufongo’ (type of bread made from corn flour). Not forgetting the traditional Goat Cheese from the Fogo Island, the best and the most appreciated of the archipelago.
